I'm a semi-retired academic at a Sydney university, lecturing on a Masters Program in the field of Semiotic Theory.
I'm seriously travel addicted, having lived in or journeyed extensively through Europe, the Middle East and Asia. I've been to such diverse and far-flung places as Inner Mongolia, Nepal, Kashmir, Egypt, Turkey, Israel, Iran, Russia and Japan.
My interests include writing short stories, horse-riding, abseiling, swimming, theatre, opera and dance.
In my first life, long ago and far away, I studied dance at the Australian Dance Theatre with, among others, Rex Reid, an ex-Ballet Rambert principal and sometime partner of Moira Shearer.

Alicia Markova - ‘This is Your Life’ (1960) With Margot Fonteyn and Jessie Matthews
In the first section, Fonteyn graciously recalls, at thirteen years old, seeing Markova and recognising her the ideal of a ballerina and the impossibility of achieving such an ideal. In the second section, there seems some tension between the two stars: when Markova is asked if she recalls at aged ten who she appeared with in Dick Whittington as Salome, she replies “My understudy?” And when Mat...

It’s extraordinary to see Fonteyn late in her career dance in this famous Mikhail Fokine work, made such by Tamara Karsavina and Vaslav Nijinsky. At this time, she also danced The Ballerina role in ‘Petrushka’, again with Baryshnikov - footage of which I have also posted on UA-cam.

This is performance and rehearsal footage - I do not have a date for these films - probably late 1970s early 1980s? Can anyone confirm? The rehearsal footage is conducted by Michael Somes. Wendy Ellis was his third wife - the dancer having been previously married to Deirdre Annette Dixon and Dame Antoinette Sibley.

J'adore ❤❤❤
She was AMAZING
A votre avis d'où vient l'électro swing ? Quelle belle artiste et femme ❤
mental illness at its best; only analfabestias will call this "dancing"
A great deal of work in this beautiful ballet. Fabulous ❤
I am not Internet savvy - Your you-tube sounds interesting - I hate to think of it closing - but I cannot understand a word of your instructions for finding the new You-tube channel
Touching
Wow! Two of the very best!
The bluebird is a symbol of happiness, and these two certainly deliver!
I'm a little sad - I just think that these wonderful dancers are no longer with us, I image. If the chorus's was around 25 at the time of filming (1960), then they would be around their late 80s now.
I think the callas wobble in this later version (mid 60s?) is musically unacceptable, it's really a bad sound and barely in pitch, it's tragic. I love her in earlier recordings, and she is a better musician than Renata. I also think puccini soprano roles do not benefit from an acting voice so much as bel canto, as the music already has the drama encoded in it. I wouldn't want to hear teblaldi in norma or polliuto or even Lucia , but she is defo the best in this role for me. No acting required, just glorious tone, same for Mimi, Manon L and Minnie, I don't think callas can touch her tbh in these roles although Callas is overall my preferred artist.
She was 30 here but her legs are as sweet as a young girl’s. Her artistry just keeps on giving joy. 💖
Incredibly beautiful. The pace is perfection. 🌷🌷🌷
I am thoroughly revisiting your channel this Summer. Cheers 🌹
You can see where Michael Jackson got most of his moves from!
What is the name of those music??🙏🙏🙏
I can see now how Rudolf Nureyev recreated some of this staging for his production of The Sleeping Beauty for the National Ballet of Canada in 1972. And this is the first time I've ever seen Carabosse dance on pointe!
thank you so much for posting - i read suzanne farrell’s memoir years ago but had to take her at her word that she was talented. i see now why she was a balanchine muse, she dances like flowing water and has such long limbs!!
He really was one of the best ever to do ballet--the Russians usually are. He had a panther-like prowess as he dominated the stage. Like he was lighter than air and would still crush anything in his path. Baryshnikov was a legend for a reason---but the one thing he did I thought was really wrong was firing Godunov after he took over at A.B.T. Ballet itself lost something. And Alex himself said, "Nobody prepared me... it smells like Russia".
Beatifull? No no no. She was just famous for what she was.
It's ironic that Gelsey truly did reach absolute perfection & yet she herself could not see it
Difficult times those days for everyone in Germany, especially girls like Anita! ❤ RIP🌹 Fantastic live performances for sure, what an temperament she must had! 👍
John, is this footage in the public domain? Where did you obtain it from?
Her technique seems lacking, probably due lack of good coaching.
Read somewhere that some in this group were pervs and had relationships with underage, but I guess at that time was more normal than now. Still difficult to process. I guess we will never know the truth.
Exquisite
Incredible
I w9nder how much early Rambert stuff is out there
So incredible to see
Intro musik di awal, mirip instrumen Bali (Indonesia?
Indeed she was wonderful and they didn’t have the shoes they have nowadays
Beautiful as always , as a young student I never really fall in love ….. pure means more and so clear to the narrative , loved that era ballet was the story never the soloist , a collab met in tradition not a tic toc challenge multiple pirouettes and no soul x x loved this 😍
Awful music
I've only seen photos of her in my old ballet book, so this clip is really wonderful!❤
12 years ago, I wrote a full length play about Miss Spessivtzeva for my thesis. She plays a big role in my life. I remember researching her life, trying some of her ballet exercises (which are really hard) and watched this film in VHS many times. I love her very much.
I really like the part from 8.50 on. Very tender and convincing. The turned-in position at 9.46 is striking. Does anyone know who coached Fonteyn in this role? Was it only De Valois?
Viola Essen committed suicide by taking an overdose of sleeping pills in 1970. Her ex, Oric Bovar, believed he was Jesus. In 1977, he and five of his followers attempted to resurrect a man who had died from cancer. They failed and the maggot-eaten corpse was found by police about two months later. Bovar was charged with failing to report a death, a violation of the NY Health Code. A few months later, Bovar also committed suicide, in his case, by jumping to his death.
